Excursions from Madrid

Few cities have so much on their doorstep as Madrid.
Within 45 minutes of the capital lies no less than 5 UNESCO World Hertitage Sites of the medieval cities of Toledo, Segovia and Avila, the royal summer retreat of Aranjuez and the vast palace monastery of El Escorial.

Between them their history covers Spain from its pre Roman beginnings through its many periods of Roman rule, Visigoth conquest and Moorish Spain though to its “Reconquista” and Christian recovery.

All are within a short distance from Madrid and offer so much more than a day excursion but rather an immersion in history and a glimpse into former worlds that have shaped ours.

Along the way are a myriad of other destinations that can be enjoyed and discovered for their wineries, gastronomy and history.

Madrid lies in the centre of Spain and is its heart in the provinces that comprise the old kingdom of Castilla.

The capital Madrid has been that for little more than 400 years but within the region lie the important UNESCO and historical cities of Toledo and Segovia as well as Ávila that stretch back thousands.
