La Rioja Wine & History

When people think of La Rioja they think of one thing… wine….

And its not unreasonable – there are after all nearly 700 wineries in the region which is then subsequently subdivided into three sub regions of Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa.

It is the later which we have chosen as the heart of our wine experiences – this small stretch is the meeting point of cultures and history with the vital lifeblood of the River Ebro on one side and the Cantabrian Mountains on the other.

La Rioja Alavesa straddles the border of the Basque Country and includes arguably some of the finest wines ever produced in the world.

It certainly has some of the oldest – indeed you will experience the oldest winery in continual existence – with the first vines planted by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and whose annual harvest crop is a reminder of the continuity of life that wine brings.
